Killeavy Old Church
Ring of Gullion

Killeavy is the site of one of Ireland's most important early convents founded by St. Moninna in the 5th Century.

Although plundered by the Vikings in 923 A.D., monastic life continued and the Augustinian Nuns occupied the site until 1542. The large stone in the Northern part of the graveyard traditionally marks her burial place. The two Churches are aligned east/west and are linked by later walling, giving the impression of a single, very long building. To the southwest, higher up the mountain, is the Saint's holy well.

Once, many years after the death of Moninna, St Finnian paid a visit to Killevy and Abbess Derlasra instructed her servant girl to draw water from the holy well and use it to fill vessels containing a little yeast. The girl was to pray earnestly to Moninna for help. When she had done this, the fermenting water was turned into the best beer through the blessing she gave in St Moninna's name and there was adequate refreshment for those who drank the beer.
